I'd like to see a company or two to provide some support such as maybe a prize, posting of the gamebox on their web site with a little boohaha to boot. Maybe an official judge from the company like Simonitch from GMT since he is so good with graphics.

Fritz and I are planning very much along these lines. I'll be drafting requests for support over the next few days.

The luminaries of game design all seem to show up at CSW regularly (except Costikyan - what's his nickname there?), but I'm not about to pounce on'em with live messages. If you do know the publishers, PLEASE ask them to judge. I can't imagine anyone with better knowledge (or game libraries) than they. We can deal with prizes later when they're on board. Maybe push their buttons and put their company pride and competitive spirit to our benefit... F2

Today I'll be sending out emails to alot of publishers asking for their support; more importantly, I'll be asking them for permission to use their designs. Needless to say, Copyright is a sticky issue and we'll have to post in big block letters just who will/won't allow CB Gameboxes of their games. Cross your fingers on getting responses by Dec. 30th. I'll start sending out 2nd emails to all the yellow light publishers today. Oddly, not a single question from the contestants in this area given the stern warnings about permission. F2

Well, whilst Clash of Arms' response has been disappointing (to say the least) Liz Fulda's comment on CSW (Great War at Sea folder - post 4159) makes very interesting reading. If Fritz pulls this off then it will be a major step forward in the legitimacy of cyberboard.
Could be a real coup. Go Fritz, go!

New to the board and CB as well. However, Randy Lein, our editor/proofreader/CB guru, he does make very good gameboxes. His Ataturk gamebox was great and just sent me the new Maiwand gamebox today.
With Khyber Pass Games getting up and running in a BIG way by the end of January, I am looking forward to see the designs.
As soon as we (read I) have a handle on costs and the like, I will offer a game or two as a reward/prize for the best KPG gamebox design that's not Randy's.
As a final comment, I would also like to thank Andy L. for all his support over the past few months.

Wahooo! And welcome aboard, Bruce. We'd hoped to have the publishers here, but this is sooner than I'd expected. Anyway, the dialogue has produced more than just a contest and we're beginning to realize it isn't that hard to set some standards, ie respecting copyrights and languages (!). I'd certainly appreciate Khyber Pass' input 'cuz I'm just a slob who pulled in alot of Cyberboard "veterans". Fritz

Just for that, I'm gonna have to add KPG to my links on my web page.

Clash of Arms - an ADC vendor, not Cyberboard - has granted permission to a CBDO contestant for use of one of its games. Granted, it was an older, out-of-print game, but most games are. Anyone who feels there's a copyright issue with his choice of Gameboxes can always ask the publisher: they've been cooperative so far and the trend is toward promoting CB as a marketing tool, not against. Is anyone familiar with GMT's approval process?
I've read it, but it isn't clear to me if I have to track every person that gets a copy of their gamebox and notify them of it, or if I just have to notify them of the site it is being distributed from. If they want notification of every instance of distribtion, I don't see how you can even put it up on a site for download.
Thanks,
Robert

GMT did indeed make a powerful legal requirement. You'll be liable for your Gameboxes of their games; the likelihood that anyone will try to profit from your Gameboxes (and that GMT should find out about it) is ridiculous. They'll be available free of charge after the contest at Limey Yank Games. ADC modules are a different story - some might not be aware that while many sell licensed ADC modules, GMT does not. Not our problem at CBDO, but we're a site that encourages cooperation with the industry and its clients. Fritz

It appears to me that GMT are viewed by many as among the good guys in wargame publishing and I've yet to see anything that would prevent that being my view too. As such I can not believe that they are attempting to produce an agreement that is unworkable. I'm no legal eagle (not even a legal budgie) but it appears that their point 1 relates to ownership of copyright and therefore point 3 is effectively talking about transferof the ownership of that copyright. Since distribution does not forsake copyright ownership I do not believe that there is an issue here.
That said, I'd suggest that Fritz seek clarification from GMT and advise us all accordingly - OK Fritz?

GMT's intent here is to protect its copyrights; as a Gamebox designer you'll have to enter into a legal agreement with GMT. It's your Gamebox whether you distribute it or not, so no, you don't HAVE to track everyone downloading it. However, if GMT finds your Gamebox being sold in some fashion, you're still the owner and liable as such. I REALLY wouldn't worry; again, nobody's dumb enough to pay. F2

GMT is pretty decent about how they handle the gameboxes. I think it only fair they ask that you strive to be fair in return.
